Lavonia to Close Jones St. Extension to Through Traffic

The city of Lavonia is closing part of a road most people don’t even know the name of but likely have often used.

It’s the Jones St. Extension. That’s the little road in front of what used to be Ron’s Florist and the Synovus Bank building.

The Lavonia City Council approved the first reading of the Jones Street Traffic Change ordinance at Monday’s meeting.

City Mayor Courtney Umbehant said the decision to close the street is part of the City’s new updated Streetscape plan.

After hearing from the Mayor, the council voted unanimously to pass the first reading of the new ordinance.

A barrier will be put at the end of the street in front of the Synovus Bank building to keep motorists from getting to the intersection. Access will only be from Grogan St.

In other business, the Council voted to re-open Yow St. A dirt road off Parkertown Road at the request of a property owner.
