Lavonia Police Officers Honored for Heroism

L-R: Officers Jonathon Merck, Jay Thomas, and Ezra Segars

Three Lavonia Police officers are credited with saving a life and were honored for their efforts this week.

At the Lavonia City Council meeting Monday night, Police Chief Bruce Carlisle presented officers Jonathan Merck, Ezra Segars and Jay Thomas with the LifeSaving Commendation for their actions after responding to a recent call about a medical emergency.

“You and your partners immediately began to search the area around the residence and ultimately located the subject in a wooded area approximately 150 yards from the residence. While assessing the condition of the subject, you determined the subject was found unresponsive. After administering two doses of Narcan, the subject began to respond. The subject was physically carried, I think Jonathan picked him up and carried him on his shoulders and carried him to the awaiting medical personnel,” Carlisle explained.

In making the presentation Monday, Chief Carlisle said the officers went above and beyond the call of duty.

“I commend you for your actions during this critical incident and your eagerness to execute lifesaving training that has been afforded to you,” he said. “Your actions during this medical emergency are in keeping with the high professional standards of the Lavonia Police Department and the delivery of services to our citizenry and I present you with the Lavonia Police Department LifeSaving medal to be worn on your uniform for all to know of your great accomplishments,” Carlisle said.

Carlisle noted all three officers are relatively new to the force and Officer Segars is still in field training.
