Lavonia Police Continue Search for New Officer

The Lavonia Police Department continues its search for a new police officer.

The search began in September with no luck and now a large hiring banner graces the front of the department on Augusta Rd.

Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle said for the first time in a long time, they have an opening for one new officer.

“Lavonia is growing and as the City grows we have to grow the police department as we go,” he said. “Having openings in the police department is not news, but here in Lavonia Police Department, it is because we really don’t have turnover. This is the first opening for a full-time position we’ve had in many years.”

Chief Carlisle said they are offering an attractive benefits package as well as a good salary.

“We do believe that we have a benefits package thanks to the Council and Mayor that’s second to none. We have a great retirement system now; 20 years at age 55, which is through the Georgia Municipal Association. We have top pay in the area. We just believe that we have a great police department here. One thing that we take great pride in is that we are the only state-certified police department in the Northern Judicial Circuit,” he said.

Other benefits include 100% insurance and dental coverage, paid holidays/vacation and sick leave, 12-hr shifts with every other weekend off, and an annual uniform allowance.

Carlisle said applicants will go through a thorough screening process and background check.

However, he said you don’t have to have prior experience as a law enforcement officer.

“We’re looking for the best candidate out there; whether it’s someone we send to the police academy or someone that’s already a certified law enforcement officer. It makes no difference to me. I just want the best person for the job. And a lot of times that’s somebody that has no experience. We’re looking for certain qualities and characteristics that fit in with the police department and if they have those traits and characteristics then that’s the person I’m looking for,” he said.

Carlisle said they currently have 16 officers and will have 17 with the hiring of the new officer and are hoping to expand again next year.

Applicants are asked to apply in person at the Lavonia Police Department on Grogan St. In Lavonia.
