Lavonia PD Active Shooter Training Continues Today

Lavonia PD and other law enforcement will once again be at Lavonia Elementary School today for part two of active shooter training.

Police Chief Bruce Carlisle says the training is part of the ongoing training officers go through on a regular basis.

On Tuesday, Lavonia PD officers along with Franklin Co deputies spent classroom time learning about some of the new and improved methods being used by law enforcement in active shooter situations.

Scott Andrews is the Safety and Security Director for the Franklin County School System and oversees the school resource officers assigned to each school.

Andrews, a former law enforcement officer, says this type of ongoing training is vital to keeping children in the school safe.

“This is training that we hope we never need but it’s kind of been proven in the world we live in today that we do need it,” he said. “I’m just grateful for these guys and ladies willing to come out and go through the training to ensure that our staff and our students are protected.”

Interim School Superintendent Chuck Colquitt said this type of law enforcement training also helps school system staff know what to expect from law enforcement if there is an active shooter event.

“I think it provides us with insight to be more prepared with our kids,” he said. “These guys are doing this on their own and they realize there’s a need for it. This is very good for us to be able to take part in it and be prepared to keep our kids safe.”

Chief Carlisle said a larger scale, more in-depth active shooter training is being planned for next year.

Lavonia Police have taken part in large-scale active shooter training in the past and have also trained with other local law enforcement agencies.

Carlisle said any business, organization, or group that would be interested in having an active shooter session can call his office at 706-356-4848.
