Lavonia Night Out Against Crime a Success

1Lavonia Police are hailing another annual National Night Out Against Crime event a big success.

Hundreds of Lavonia citizens, young and old, descended on Main St. around the Gazebo Thursday evening for a time of fun, fellowship and good food with family, friends and members of the Lavonia Police Force.

“It seems to be going pretty good,” Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle said Thursday. “We typically get 400-500 people every year to this event. The kids are enjoying the rides, the music is great and everything seems to be going well.”

National Night Out, “America’s Night Out Against Crime”, was started in 1984 by the National Neighborhood Watch as  an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, and to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

“This is our way of giving back to the community for all that they do for us and show our unity against criminals that we’re not going to tolerate their criminal activities,” Carlisle said.

Carlisle said Lavonia’s National Night Out Against is the result of h is department and the community working together.

“We just appreciate everybody that helps us with this event,” he said.

This was the 12th year for the Lavonia National Night Out Against Crime.
