The City of Lavonia is moving ahead with its plan to put in a splash pad and group shelter in the City Park.

At their meeting this week, City Manager Charles Cawthon went before the City Council to get their approval to move forward.

Cawthon first gave the Council an overview of the splash pad proposal from Great Southern Recreation.

“The splash pad project will cost us $196,809. That is turnkey complete. We’re just going to hook directly to our water system and the outflow directly to our sewer system. That way, we meter that water and keep up with it,” he said.

However, the group shelter cost of $67,000 is for the materials only.  Cawthon said the funds to build it will come from recreation SPLOST funds.

He said they can also use funds from the American Rescue Plan Act to help supplement any shortfall and he recommended approval of both projects.

After hearing from Cawthon, the City Council voted to approve both projects.

Cawthon said they hope to have the splash pad and the group shelter up by the end of summer.
