Lavonia City Council Approves Variance for Proposed Apartment Complex

A variance has been granted for a proposed apartment complex on Ross Place near the hospital

Lavonia City officials have cleared the way for the possible construction of a new apartment complex in Lavonia.

At last week’s City Council meeting, Council members voted to approve a variance request for the construction of a three-building complex on Ross Place and Ralph Owens Parkway near St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital.

Property owner Carol Mauldin of Hochston, Georgia submitted a variance request to the City to have the 19.75 acres approved for a four-building apartment complex and a public hearing was held on August 5th.

After hearing from the public, the City reviewed the proposal and last week approved the variance with the condition that three apartment buildings, not four as requested, could be built.

Each apartment building is expected to be four stories high, with 32 units per building or eight one- and two-bedroom apartments per floor.

Parking for each unit will also be provided.

The new apartment complex, if built, would help provide the extra housing residents at last week’s Comprehensive Plan meeting said is needed in Lavonia.

Cauthon tells WLHR News that as of last Friday, Mauldin has not applied for a building permit and no construction date has been announced.
