Lavonia City Council Approves Sunday Package Sale Referendum

The City of Lavonia may soon allow Sunday package sales.

At their meeting this week, the Lavonia City Council voted to put Sunday package sales on a referendum for citizens inside the city limits.

City Manager Charles Cawthon said it’s an attempt by the City to more closely align their alcohol ordinance with the County.

Cawthon said if approved by voters, the Sunday package sales would be for all package sales, liquor, beer, and wine.

Councilman Eddie Floyd asked for clarification regarding exactly who would be voting for or against the referendum.

“Not everybody in Lavonia who goes to the polls will have this on their ballot,” he noted.

“For purpose of clarity, there will be no elections held here at City Hall. All elections are now at the Community Center. So, you and I go to the polls that day, you will have this referendum question on your ballot, I won’t. And again, you are approving a referendum for citizens (inside the city limits) to decide what they want in their community,” Cawthon said.

After hearing from Cawthon the council voted unanimously to put a Sunday package sales referendum on the ballot either for the May Primary or the November General Election.
