Lavonia Chamber Collecting School Supplies for Kids in Need

The start of the new school year is a month away but parents and schools are already starting to prepare for students’ return to the classroom.

And the Lavonia Chamber of Commerce is also is asking the public to help students by donating school supplies.

Chamber Director Julie Calhoun said the school supply drive began Tuesday and runs through the end of the month.

Calhoun said there are a lot of children in Lavonia and surrounding areas who will return to class without the necessary supplies they need.

“Every year the Chamber collects school supplies for the elementary school for students,” she explained. “There are a lot of kids that don’t have all of the supplies that they need. So, they asked us to reach out to the community to help fill those needs. So, I decided to give people have a month if they have the opportunity or ability to help us, I might be able to gather more things for the kids.”

Calhoun said the Chamber is collecting all kinds of school supplies so anything you can donate will be greatly appreciated.

“Back packs are one thing; folders with pockets, 1 – 2″ binders, glue, pencils and pencil boxes, crayons, all those kinds of things,” she said.

Donations can be dropped of at the Chamber offices on E. Main St. In Lavonia during regular business hours from 10a to 3p.

The Chamber is closed on Wednesdays.

Calhoun said they will likely do another drive in the fall for winter coats.
