Lavonia Chamber Awards Scholarships

chamber winnersThe Lavonia Chamber of Commerce demonstrated its commitment to promote and support education in Franklin County by presenting three $500 scholarships to Franklin County High School seniors.

Education Committee Chairman Mary Michaud said that the field of candidates was so strong the judges recommended awarding a third scholarship this year.

Each winner is an honor graduate who has excelled in academic and extra-curricular pursuits.

The winners include, Cassidy Starling who received the Calvin P. Andrews Memorial Scholarship Sponsored by the Lavonia Chamber of Commerce. 

Starling has earned numerous accolades in Band, served in student government and been President of Beta Club.  She has been a club editor on the yearbook staff and participated in several of the clubs’ charitable activities. 

Starling is the daughter of Mitch and Vicki Starling and plans to attend Young Harris College on a music scholarship.

Sara Freeman will also attend Young Harris College. 

Freeman is a varsity tennis MVP and a state winner in FFA Agriculture Communications Career Development Event in 2013 earning a sixth place national finish. 

The daughter of Scott and Kasie Freeman, Sara actively serves in church ministry to children and has volunteered at the local animal shelter, a convalescent center and with Special Olympics.

Brooke Royston is the daughter of Ronnie and Lauren Royston, has received a University of Georgia Merit Award and will attend UGA. 

Through dual enrollment at Emmanuel College she has already completed 27 college hours.

Royston has lettered in Cross Country, served as secretary-treasurer for the Anchor Club, has been a member of the Homecoming Court and Miss Lion Court. 

She also received awards in Spanish and A.P. History.   Additionally, Royston organized a countywide fundraiser for a local pediatric bone cancer patient and is also involved in her church’s ministry to children.  Royston was voted Best All-Around Senior Superlative.

The scholarships were presented during the recent Senior Honors night.
