The City of Lavonia commemorates Arbor Day with a special proclamation and tree planting.

Lavonia celebrated Arbor Day Wednesday afternoon at City Hall.

Lavonia Downtown Development Authority Executive Director Marie Morse read this year’s proclamation.

Members of the Lavonia Boy Scouts and Cub Scout packs, along with members of the Lavonia Tree Commission, the Lavonia Garden Club, the Historical Preservation Commission and the public attended the ceremony and tree planting yesterday.

Boy Scout Troop Pack 51 worked for several hours Wednesday in Lavonia City Park with arborist John Shearhouse learning about trees and doing some prep work for the spring plantings.

Shearhouse said this year they planted an American Red Maple in the park near the creek.

Lavonia along with the City of Royston was recently named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.

In order to qualify as a Tree City USA community, a municipality must meet four standards established by the Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters.
One of those standards is to have a Tree Board or Commission.
Other Tree City USA standards include having a Tree ordinance, a community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita, and an arbor day observance and proclamation.
This morning, the City of Royston will celebrate Arbor Day as well.
Royston DDA Executive Director Candy Rhoades tells WLHR News a proclamation will be read at 10a this morning at the Royston Community and Wellness Park, followed by a tree planting.
The public is invited to attend.
