Lavonia Arbor Day Honors Late Margaret Ayers’ Love of Animals

The Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter now has a new tree growing in front of the soon-to-be-open adoption wing in honor of the late Margaret Ayers.

Last Thursday, the City of Lavonia celebrated Arbor Day by planting a red Japanese Maple at the shelter in Ayers’ memory.

Dozens of shelter supporters, city staff, and other well-wishers gathered at the Shelter for the tree planting.

They were joined by the Boy Scouts of Troop 51 in Lavonia who helped nursery owner and certified arborist John Shearhouse who said he selected a tree that was a favorite of Margaret Ayers.

Shelter co-founder and board member Dr. Pam Stone said Margaret Ayers was a great supporter of the shelter and would have loved the tree planted in her honor.

Stone said in addition to the tree, they plan to put flowers around it and a bench where people can sit.

She added they hope to have the new adoption wing open sometime this spring.
