Labor Day Weekend Road Fatalities Up in Georgia

The Labor Day weekend road fatalities count is out, and it’s up from last year.  The Georgia Department of Safety reports a total of 14 people died during the travel period, which began on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and ended Monday night at 11:59:59 p.m.  That’s up from 11 in 2021.

One of this year’s deaths included 53-year-old Richard Dale Crowe of Hartwell.  On Sunday around 4:20 a.m., Crowe was walking northbound with his bike in the north lane on Historic Highway 17, about .2 miles south of Highway 17.  Around that time, a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by 25-year-old Tyrik Tremayne Combs of Martin, was also travelling northbound, when the vehicle’s right front side struck Crowe.  The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.  The Georgia State Patrol worked the accident and said no charges will be filed.
