Iva, SC Woman Killed in Freak Accident in Hartwell

Walmart wreckCharges are pending against the driver of a Lincoln Towncar involved in fatal wreck in Hartwell Wednesday.

It happened about 1p in the parking lot next to the Hartwell Walmart on U.S. 29.

According to Frank Young, Georgia State Patrol Public Information officer, a  1995 Lincoln Towncar was backing out of the parking space at an accelerated speed. The vehicle spun completely around and its back end rested on top of the hood of a 2002 Nissan Altima parked parallel to it.

“Due to the impact from the Lincoln, the Nissan hit a Chevrolet Cobalt parked parallel to it. The passenger of the Lincoln was attempting to enter the car, but ended up on the ground after impact with the Nissan,” Young said. 

The passenger of the Towncar is identified as Shelley M. Bowman, 50, of Iva, SC. Bowman died at the scene.

The driver of the Lincoln is identified as Linda F. Durham, age 72 from Iva, SC. Durham was not injured.

The driver of the Nissan complained of injuries but was not transported.  Young said charges are pending against Durham pending the outcome of the investigation.
