State arson investigators are looking into the cause of a mobile home fire in Elbert County.

It happened last Tuesday evening at a home in the Lexington Highway area.

Elbert County Fire Chief Rick Mewborne says by the time firefighters arrived, the home was fully engulfed in flames.

“It was burning on one end of the modular home and they attacked the fire and of course got it out”, said Mewborne. “About half of the home was destroyed by the fire, and the other half was just a combination of some smoke and heat damage.”

According to Mewborne, no one was home when the fire began and there were no injuries.

Mewborne said the family who lived in the home lost everything and the Red Cross was called in to assist.

According to Elbert County Sheriff’s Investigator Darren Scarborough there is still no word on what started the house fire and arson has not yet been ruled out.
