High School Graduation Rates Highest Ever in the State – Flat/Slightly Down Locally

Georgia’s high school graduation rate report is out, and statewide, the rate has reached
an all-time high of 84.1%.  That’s a 0.4% increase over last year’s rate of 83.7%
statewide.

Locally, the graduation rate for Franklin County Schools was flat.  For the 2021-2022
school year, out of 257 students, 232 receive their diplomas. That translates to a
graduation rate of 90.3%, same as last year.  Franklin County Schools joins 106 other
school systems in Georgia having graduation rates at 90% or above.

In Hart County, the numbers were down just a hair.  In 2021, the Hart County Charter
System had a graduation rate of 97.0%.  For the 2021-2022 school year, out of 236
students, 228 graduated.  That translates to a 96.6% graduation rate.  Hart County joins
40 other districts in the state recording rates at 95% or above.  Hart County High School Principal Kevin Gaines tells WLHR news that Hart County ranks 20th in the state out of 185 school districts.

State Schools Superintendent Richard Wood said, “Teachers and students who persevered through the challenges of the last several years deserve credit for Georgia’s graduation rate increasing and other recent positiveindicators, like Georgia students beating the SAT national average once again.  I commend Georgia’s educators and the class of 2022, and am confident we will continue to see improvements as we expand opportunities for students and invest in the academic recovery of our state.”

Georgia calculates a four-year adjusted cohort graduation rate as required by federal
law. This rate is: The number of students who graduate in four years with a regular high school diploma, divided by the number of students who form the adjusted cohort for the graduating class.  Adjusted Cohort Rate Definition: From the beginning of ninth grade, students who are entering that grade for the first time form a cohort that is subsequently adjusted by adding any students who transfer into the cohort during the next three years and subtracting any students who transfer out.

Overall, Georgia’s graduation rate has increased by 14.4 percentage points since state
began using the four-year adjusted cohort calculation at the beginning of the 2011-2012
school year as required by Federal Law.
