High Number of Fake State Tax Returns Submitted So Far This Year

Georgia Department of Revenue officials say they’re already seeing numerous cases of scammers attempting to file fraudulent 2014 income tax returns.

Department officials said in a statement late last week that they believe the personal information being used to file the fraudulent returns was gained through third-party security breaches.

Officials say the Department of Revenue has flagged a significant number of returns as potentially fraudulent and the department will reach out to taxpayers who have had dubious returns filed in their names.

Department Commissioner Lynnette T. Riley says state systems containing taxpayers’ personal information hasn’t been compromised.

Officials say taxpayers may also visit the Georgia Tax Center online and set notifications for when a tax return has been filed with their Social Security number.
