Hartwell Lake Clean Up Campaign Still Looking for Volunteers

bg-lake-hartwell2.jpgLake Hartwell Clean Up Green Up efforts are still underway though the initial spring cleanup event has ended.

Earlier this year, the Savannah Army Corps of Engineers’ Hartwell Lake Office and the Lake Hartwell Association (LHA) announced a new, year-round effort at keeping the shores of Hartwell Lake clean.

Back in February, Dustin Cullen, Hartwell Lake natural resources specialist, said it is hoped property owners and others around the lake would take up the initiative to keep their part of the lake debris free.

“This clean up initiative provides a chance for people who care about Hartwell Lake to roll up their sleeves and give something back to the lands and water they use and appreciate,” said Cullen. “The lands and waters of Hartwell Lake belong to the people of this community. This effort provides everyone an opportunity to give back to the resource that they value. The long term goal is to use this event as a springboard to transition the effort into a proactive year long ’maintenance‘ program to keep areas clean and green instead of a reactive once a year cleanup.”Copy of Fishing on Hartwell lake

The Corps is still inviting local residents, scout groups, civic clubs, and other potential volunteers to join year-round efforts in maintaining a clean and inviting environment for all lake visitors.

For more than 25 years, the Lake Hartwell Association has worked in partnership with the Corps of Engineers to clean up the shoreline and islands of the lake.  Cullen said anyone interested in volunteering should contact him.

Cullen’s number is 706-856-0311.

April’s Clean Up Green Up campaign elicited more than 300 volunteers who collected over 3,000 pounds of debris from Lake Hartwell’s shoreline and water.

For past and future efforts, a Clean Up Green Up Appreciation Picnic is scheduled in April 2016 to recognize volunteers’ commitment to keeping Hartwell clean and beautiful.
