Hartwell Firefighters Battle Early Morning Fire Near High School

A vacant building near Hart County High School has gone up in flames.

Firefighters were quickly on the scene of structure fire in Hartwell across from the high school after it was first called in around 4a Tuesday morning.

Hartwell Police tell WLHR News the blaze started in the old Merritt Green building across from the high school parking lot and school bus lot at the corner of Campbell Drive and Legion St.

By the time firefighters arrived the structure was fully involved.  Flames could still be seen coming from the building at 6:30a.

Hartwell Police said a number of streets around the blaze were closed to traffic this morning. They included:

– Campbell Drive
– Legion St.
– Howell St.
– Cleveland Avenue
– Campbell & 1st St.
– Campbell and E. Franklin St.

Students and parents trying to get to the high school were advised to use the back access road that runs between the Hart County High School and the Hart County Middle School.

No word on what started the fire, but we will have more on this story as details become available.
