Hart County Voters Deciding Four Local Races Today

photoIn Hart County, voters are deciding on two Board of Commission seats and two Board of Education seats.

Both the District 2 and District 4 County commission races are contested.

In the District 2 race, incumbent Frankie Teasley will try to hold on to his seat for the next four year term.  In April, Teasley won a close run-off election against challenger Garry Hamilton to fill the unexpired term of the late Dan Reyen who died last November.

Teasley now faces Hamilton again, as well as retired businessman James Faulkner. Candidate Jerry Canady has withdrawn from the race, but his name still appears on the ballot.

In the District 4 race, incumbent Bill Myers is facing challenger Ricky Carter.

All county commission candidates are running as Republicans.

In the school board races, District 2 and District 4 seats are up for grabs.  Hartford “Mike” Buckel is running against challenger Mathew Honiotes.  Incumbent Paul Abernathy has chosen not to run again.

In the District 4 race, Richard Sutherland is facing off against Steven L. Wilson.  Incumbent Justin Corbin has also chosen not to run again.

During early voting, which ended last Friday, there was some confusion for some voters regarding which ballot to choose, according to County Registrar John Stercho.  Some voters wanted to vote as Democrats in the local races as well as State and federal races, but had to ask for a Republican ballot because all of the candidates in the local races were running as Republicans.

“It is a party primary,” Stercho said. “In Hart County, we don’t have Democratic candidates for the local races. There’s been some confusion and we’ve had to work with some individual voters to change them over to the correct party because of the their interest in the local races.”

921 WLHR News will have live coverage of both the Franklin and Hart county local races tonight after the polls close.
