Hart County Takes Next Step Toward Construction of Northern Sewer Trunk Line

Hart County has received word that their pre-application for the second part of grant funding to pay for the Northern Sewer Trunk line has been approved.

Hart County Administrator Jon Caime made the announcement to the Board of Commissioners At their meeting last week.

“We received notification of the first grant for about $700,000, but we just received notification that our pre-application was approved for $300,000 which is the second piece of the puzzle,” Caime said.

The City of Lavonia in conjunction with Hart County has been working to build the northern sewer trunk line for the past eight years but has not been successful in getting the financing.

That all changed last year when German manufacturer Haring announced plans to build in the Gateway II Industrial Park.

Häring, a leading global manufacturer of precision components and subassemblies for the automotive industry, plans to build a 196,000-foot facility as well as a separate training center and detached dining hall at 83 Anton Haering Street in the Gateway II Industrial Park. The new facility will manufacture fuel injection parts and other precision components for the automotive industry.

With the coming of the huge Haring plant , the extra sewer and water capacity will be needed.

The current sewer line from Gateway down SR59 is already at 75% capacity according to Lavonia City officials and could not handle the extra load the new Haring plant will bring.

If the second grant is approved, and awarded that will just leave a local match, but Caime said there’s some good news in that as well.

“The remaining amount is about $400,000, which will be borne by Hart County, and we’re looking at the possibility of some grant funding or other ways to fund that also,” he said.

Total cost of the northern sewer trunk line project is just over $1.3 million.
