Hart County Sheriff’s Deputies Help Capture Two Suspects in Oconee County, SC

Hart County Sheriff’s deputies had a hand in capturing two suspects involved in a high-speed chase just over the state line in South Carolina.

It started Monday morning when, according to the Oconee County, SC Sheriff’s office deputies learned that the pair had stolen skid steer in North Carolina, but that was recovered later.

The pair then allegedly stole a golf cart.

Some further investigation by deputies found that the trailer being pulled by the suspect’s truck had been reported stolen from Seneca while the truck itself was reported stolen from Transylvania County, NC.

A chase of their truck began in North Carolina and then into South Carolina where Oconee deputies picked up the chase.

The suspects sped down Highway 11 in Oconee County and the Hart County Sheriff’s office was notified the truck was speeding toward the state line bridge.

Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland said his officers were waiting on the Georgia side.

“Myself and several deputies and Tommy Whitmire, my Chief Deputy were waiting at the state line for him to come into Georgia,” Cleveland said. “Then we heard that he (suspect) had bush-bonded at the Welcome Center which means he got out on foot and ran. My three deputies went over there to assist Oconee County. I don’t know what part my three deputies played in their capture but they went over there to assist.”

Authorities say suspects had wrecked the truck near the Welcome Center on Highway 11 and got out and foot and fled into the nearby woods, but were quickly captured and arrested.

The two suspects are identified as Kenneth Robert Clark Jr. and Justin Eric Callahan, both of Anderson.

They were taken to the Oconee County Detention Center and face multiple charges in South and North Carolina.
