Hart County Jail Administrator Succumbs to Injuries From Wreck

Funeral services are set for Sunday in Royston for Hart County Sheriff’s Deputy and Jail Administrator Captain James Hammock.

Hammock died Thursday as a result of injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident last month.

The accident happened Saturday, September 20th on SR51 in Franklin County where Hammock lives.

Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland says James Hammock somehow lost control of his motorcycle going around a curve.  Cleveland said family members were following some distance behind him and came up on the wreck.

Hammock was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center suffering from severe head injuries.

Cleveland said doctors had Hammock in an induced coma to give his brain time to heal and they had hoped he would recover.

A U.S. Marine veteran, Hammock had been a training instructor with the Georgia Department of Corrections before joining the Hart County Sheriff’s Department.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Royston and a member of the Maysville Masonic Lodge and the Blue Knights.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3p from Royston First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held at Pruitt Funeral Home in Royston Saturday from 6p – 8p.  Pruitt Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.pruittfhroyston.com.

Captain James Hammock was 54.
