The Hart County Chamber of Commerce is planning what they hope will be an annual event spotlighting the county’s agricultural heritage and industry.

Chamber director Nikki Meyer spoke Tuesday to the Hart County Board of Commission about the first annual Farm Fest coming up in September.

“What we’re looking to do is highlight our agricultural roots,” Meyers told the board. “This is an opportunity for our farmers to take center stage.”

Meyer said they hope an all out marketing campaign will attract thousands to the one-day event scheduled for the third weekend of September at the Elberton Highway Park.

Chamber Board chair Bobbi Busha said the Chamber plans to put up billboards along I-85 in Franklin and Hart Counties to advertise the event.

“This is a collaborative effort,” Busha said. “We’re beginning this effort in August to run three weeks. Billboards will go up beginning at Exit 160 in Franklin County. “We’re hoping people driving along I-85 will see those billboards and say, ‘We need to get off and check out this town.'”

Meyer said they are now taking applications from local farmers for booth space at the fair, that  they hope will be an old fashioned country event featuring homemade, home grown, and hand made items.

“The local farmer’s market will be held there, we will also plant sales, we will have exhibits and an educational tent that will have speakers throughout the day,” she said.

Meyer said the Chamber asked area farmers what they would like to see at the event and most she said wanted to  hear about new advances and technology in farming.

Meyer said there will also be a children’s area with carnival rides and games.
