Hart BOC Regular Meeting Short but Productive

Short but productive could be one way to describe this week’s regular Hart County Board of Commission meeting.

The entire meeting lasted just over seven minutes, but  several items were considered and voted upon.

Among them, the board voted to accept a reimbursement from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division in the amount of $33,260.

“This is a grant that I apply for every year,” Hart County administrator Jon Caime explained. “Basically, it’s a grant to reimburse us for costs associated with managing our old landfill.”

In other business, the board also unanimously approved a license for the Swamp Guinea restaurant to sell beer and wine. Also the board approved a pay raise for a tax appraiser so he could receive his certification credit.

“We approved this certification process at a previous meeting,” noted County commission chair Bill Myers. “So I think we should go ahead and approve this for this individual.”

Other board members agreed and Myers’ motion passed unanimously.

In the public comment section, a question was asked about when the board would make a decision on the animal control position.  Caime said he’s working on it.

“I met with the Sheriff, and with Hartwell City Manager David Aldrich,” Caime said. “I’ve also spoken with the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter people and with Donna (Madkiff) with the Hart County Humane Society. I hope to have something to present to the board next month.”

When asked, Caime said the talks have been productive.  The county has been working for months on coming up with a plan for animal control in order to be in compliance with state law.

After no other public comments, the meeting was adjourned.
