Georgia Peaches Looking For a Few More Players For Vintage Baseball Game

It’s time for the annual fall classic, and no I’m not talking about the World Series.  I’m talking about the The Vintage Baseball game between “The Georgia Peaches” from The Ty Cobb Museum and “The Shoeless Joes” from the Shoeless Joe Jackson Museum.  And the Ty Cobb Museum is still looking for additional players to join the team.  The Vintage Baseball Game consists of two games and rotates between museums each year.  This year, the teams will play at Shoeless Joe Jackson Memorial Field in Greenville, South Carolina.  Ty Cobb Museum Manager Leah McCall says The Georgia Peaches still could use about four or five more players.  McCall says pretty much anybody can join the team.

“Well, just a willingness to play, and a little bit of ability to maybe hit the ball.  And of course, this is a different sort of a ball.  It’s a little bit larger than the standard baseball today because it is a ‘vintage’ baseball.  And just the ability to run the bases.”

Not only is the baseball a little larger, but they also play using rules from the 1850’s.  McCall says volunteers do not need to dress in period clothing.  Uniforms will be provided.

“And we have vest that has the museum logo on it, and then we will also furnish a hat for each player.”

Now if you do want to play in The Vintage Baseball Game, please let the Ty Cobb Museum know by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 13.  You can call them at 706-245-1825 or e-mail [email protected].  You will need to provide your own transportation to the Greenville.

The winning team gets bragging rights.  And of course, if you just want to come watch, admission is free.

Ty Cobb and Shoeless Joe Jackson had a long, storied history of friendship and rivalry sharing a common bond of playing the sport around the same time and being from the same part of the country; Shoeless Joe was from Greenville, and Ty Cobb was from Royston.
