Georgia Dept of Labor to Hold Job Search Seminar in Lavonia

With unemployment still in the double digits in Franklin and Hart counties, the Georgia Department of Labor is offering help for those looking for work.

They’re calling it the Georgia Talent Attraction Kick off and it’s designed to help job seekers put their best foot forward at a planned job fair later this month.

Next Tuesday, representatives from the Department of Labor’s Toccoa Career Center will be in Lavonia to offer tips and strategies on how to land that next job.

Toccoa Career Center Manager Greg Pitts said the all day seminar at Lavonia First Baptist Church will offer a number of informative seminars.

“This is an outstanding opportunity for job seekers to prepare for the job fair event and get the most they can once they get to the job fair,” Pitts said. “There will be some valuable workshops available such as how to prepare a resume and how to do well in an interview that will help you once you get to the job fair.”

Other seminars include how to make the most of social media to promote your skills and experience, how to develop your own 30-second commercial to market yourself to potential employers, and and how to create personal business cards.

Pitts said the Talent Attraction Kick Off next week is free and runs from 11a to 5p and he advises job seekers to come ready to increase their chances of being hired.

“If they have a resume that would be good to bring,” he said. “If they don’t have a resume, it would be good for them to write up a list of the jobs they’ve had, when they had those jobs, and what kind of work they did. The main thing is to come prepared to learn.”

The job fair itself will take place Friday, September 27 from noon until 3p at the Currahee Campus of North Georgia Tech in Stephens County.

Pitts said even with the current high unemployment rate in our area, there are companies that are hiring.

“They absolutely are and there will be employers there who will have job openings they can discuss, others will be doing interviews there or scheduling interviews for a later date. It is an excellent opportunity for those who are unemployed or under employed to really make a connection and move forward in the work force,” Pitts said.

About 60 employers will be on hand on the 27th at the job fair.  Pitts advises those coming to the job fair dress professionally and bring plenty of resumes.

Again, the Talent Attraction Kick off takes place next Tuesday at Lavonia First Baptist Church from 11a to 5p to help job seekers improve their job search skills.
