This week is Arbor Day Week in Georgia. Arbor Day in Georgia will be celebrated officially this Friday on the 18th.

Sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, Trees Atlanta is offering a week’s worth of activities to celebrate the importance of trees in a community.

Today, take some time on your own to learn why we should all plant oak trees.

Discover the many different oaks found in Georgia and how you can incorporate them into your own neighborhood by watching a video online called All About Oaks, featuring Trees Atlanta educator Andrew Nelson.

It’s available on YouTube at All About Oaks.

In the video, renowned entomologists Dr. Doug Tallamy and Sally Sears explain why oaks are such an important component of our environment.

On Thursday and Friday Trees Atlanta is giving away FREE seedlings at Murphy Crossing for you to adopt, nurture, and grow. Members of the Georgia Forestry Foundation will also be there with giveaways and instructions on how to plant the seedlings.

Select from the following seedling species:

Redbud
Southern Red Oak
Persimmon
Witch Hazel

Seedlings can be picked up at the Trees Atlanta Murphy Crossing location on Thursday, February 17, or Friday, February 18 between 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM.

In Lavonia, Arbor Day will be celebrated Thursday, February 24 with the planting of a tree at the Lavonia Ball Fields on Bear Creek Road. Details will be announced later.

And the City of Toccoa will also celebrate Arbor Day this Friday, February 18 at Emory Johnson Park.

Lavonia, Toccoa, and Royston are designated Trees City USA members.

The Tree City USA program provides communities with a four-step framework to maintain and grow their tree cover.

National Arbor Day is April 29, and this year marks the 150th anniversary of the tree planter’s holiday.
