GDOT Suspends Road Work Over New Year Holiday

As they do every time this year, the Georgia Department of Transportation is suspending road work over the New Year holidays.

Spokesperson Teri Pope says G-DOT has suspended most construction and construction lane closures .

“The Georgia Department of Transportation will not allow construction lane closures on interstates, major state routes and state routes near “major retail and tourism centers.”

Lane closures were suspended at 5 a.m. this morning and will remain stopped through 5 a.m. Friday.  But as always during a holiday event, that doesn’t mean there won’t be any emergency lane closures.

“Remember, there could be lane closures for a crash or maintenance emergency. Construction lane closures will not be in place but work zones will still be out there. Please slow down as you enter each work zone and be alert for lane shifts or changes in the work area. We hope you and your family enjoy your time together as you travel safety through Northeast Georgia,” said District Engineer Brent Cook.

And Pope again advises motorists should always check with G-DOT’s 511 before heading out.  You can also access G-DOT’s 511 app for smart phones, which is a free download from your App store.

Traveler information is also available at www.511ga.org and a toll-free number for callers from outside the state, 1-877-MYGA511 (1-877-694-2511).
