GDOT Preparing for Icy Road Conditions in North Georgia Mountains

While we here in Franklin and Hart Counties are not expecting any significant accumulation of snowfall later this afternoon and this evening, snow is expected in the North Georgia Mountains.

Tuesday crews with the Georgia Department of Transportation began preparing for snowy and icy weather in Union, Townes, Dawson, Lumpkin, and White counties.
G-DOT crews spent last night pre-treating roads and Interstates across the north Georgia mountains, according to GDOT spokesperson Annalyce Baker.

“We treated I-75 in northwest Georgia, we treated SR515 from Woodstock to Blairsville and we also treated U.S. 441 in Northeast Georgia as well,” Baker said.

Baker tells WLHR News crews are prepared to continue to spread a salt and gravel mixture today on state routes and interstates wherever there may be snow and ice accumulations – if the need arises tonight.

Baker said if you do have to travel in the north Georgia mountains today, she advises using extreme caution.

“Motorists should be very careful, make sure you drive half of your speed,” Baker advised. “If you come across black ice you can call 511 and let us know and we will put that information into our system and put on our message boards.”

Again, for the latest on road conditions in the North Georgia mountains you can dial 511 on your cell phone.
