GBI Investigating a Shooting Death Tuesday in Royston

Agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating a shooting incident in Royston where a man shot and killed himself in front of Royston Police officers.

GBI Agent in Charge, Jesse Maddox said the preliminary information indicates that on Tuesday a woman called 911 and asked to meet with officers regarding a man at a residence on Cook St. About his behavior.

Officers arrived at the home at about 1:16 p.m. and were able to convince the man to seek mental health assistance and leave the residence voluntarily.

Maddox said, however, that without any warning, the man produced a handgun and shot himself.

Officers attempted to provide emergency medical assistance, but the man was pronounced dead on the scene by the Franklin County Coroner.

As of Tuesday night, the man’s name was being withheld until the next of kin had been notified.

Maddox emphasized that no force was used by the officers on the man and no officers were injured during the incident.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
