G-DOT Crews Continue Resurfacing in Lavonia

Motorists can expect delays across parts of Franklin and Hart counties this week.

The warm weather has state and local road crews getting a jump on long awaited projects and finishing up others.

In Lavonia, what was supposed to be a weekend road resurfacing job on the SR77 Connector last weekend has now been extended, according to Georgia Department of Transportation spokesperson Teri Pope.

Pope said resurfacing needs certain weather conditions, which did not happen last weekend as expected.

“That work was stopped because of the rain over the weekend. So, that work was not completed,” said Pope. “Asphalt needs temperatures about 60 degrees for the asphalt to harden to the strength it needs to. So we were fighting temperatures and rain to get the resurfacing done.”

No word on when the SR77/Vickery St. resurfacing will be completed.  Resurfacing work is also ongoing down SR59 just outside of Lavonia. That work is expected to last all week.

And motorists traveling down SR328 in Franklin County can also expect delays.  G-DOT crews are fixing and patching spots on two bridges.

The first is the bridge over I-85, the second is over the bridge over the Gumlog Cove on Hartwell Lake.

Pope said now that the warmer weather is here, you can expect to see road crews working on State Routes at any given time.

“Spring is the start of G-DOT’s big work season. So, you’re going to see a lot more crews out during the warmer weather,” Pope said. “So if you see construction work going on, do what the signs tell you to do; slow down, merge, or wait. We need you to be extra careful around construction work, not only for our crews’ safety but yours as well.”

And Pope reminds motorists that fines for failing to obey traffic flags around work areas will result in double fines if caught.

Additionally, county road crews in Hart County are working on a repaving project on Mt. Olivet Road.

That road was closed Tuesday from Reed Creek Highway to Mt. Olivet Baptist Church and is expected to remain closed until that project is completed.
