G-DOT Begins Work on Replacing Bridge in Hart County, Detours in Place

The Georgia Department of Transportation and contractor Williams Contracting have begun working on the replacement of the bridge on SR 8 over Beaverdam Creek in Hart County.

The bridge is located about a mile and a half east of Royston in Hart County.

According to G-DOT spokeswoman Elizabeth Johnson, the project includes roadway reconstruction on the approaches east and west of the bridge.

Johnson said the new bridge will be 102-ft. long and will consist of a two-lane section with 12-foot travel lanes and 8-foot shoulders.

Traffic will be maintained on an off-site detour which is scheduled to begin next Tuesday, February 7.

The detour will take motorists over the SR17 Royston Bypass, down SR17/Bowman Highway to SR172 and then to SR8 through Hart and Elbert counties.

The net detour length is approximately 8.9 miles.

The detour will be in place once the utility relocation work has been completed.

Bridge reconstruction is expected to take approximately three months.

However, it could take longer due to weather or other factors.

Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling through work zones.
