Franklin Habitat Raises Roof on Seventh House

The group held a roof raising Saturday, the first day of construction.

Dozens of volunteers worked most of the day Saturday to get the house on Gumlog Creek Road framed in and the roof on.

Executive director Cathy Wood said normally, volunteers work on Saturdays from 8a to noon on a new house, but she said on the first day of construction, it’s a little different.

“With the raising the rood, it takes a little bit longer,” Wood said. “We want to make sure we get the walls up and the roof on because you never know what the weather will be like, so we have a lot going on that day.” Habitat roof raising2

Wood said out of all the days needed to build a Habitat home, the first day roof raising is one of the most heartwarming and emotional.

“It’s such a touching moment because you’ll see 15 different people pull up that first wall,” she said. “There’s nothing more exciting than to see that first wall go up.”

Wood said it will take about six months to complete the new house because volunteers only work on Saturday mornings, but she said volunteers are needed every weekend.

“We need volunteers to keep coming back,” she said. “We know people have their own lives, but if you can give us four hours a week, you’ll receive the best blessing you’ve had in a long time.”

Each week, a poster will be put up in front of the house listing the work that will be done the following week so volunteers know what skills might be needed.

The seventh Habitat house is going to a single mother of two.
