The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department is welcoming two new freshman deputies.

Sheriff Stevie Thomas said Antwan McCurry and Luke Bennett graduated from the Georgia Police Academy on March 21.   Thomas said the two underwent many long hours of training at the academy.

“They participated in 11 weeks and 408 hours of basic law enforcement training courses,” Thomas said. “The courses included criminal justice, criminal law, constitutional law, firearms, emergency operations, first-aid, community relations, modern police procedures and emergency vehicle operation. These courses are required by the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Council.”

Thomas said McCurry and Bennett were part of the 268th graduating class from the Georgia Police Academy.

They help fill the gap left by several seasoned officers who, according to the Sheriff, recently resigned to take jobs with other law enforcement agencies offering higher pay.   Both McCurry and Bennett are now on the job.
