Franklin County Rabies Clinic Coming May 2nd

With rabies cases already on the rise this year, now is the time to make sure your pet is vaccinated against this deadly disease.

The most common carriers of the rabies virus in Northeast Georgia are raccoons, fox, and skunks.  If your dog or cat roam the countryside or are even outdoors in a dog pen or on a tie-out,  they need to be protected with a current rabies vaccine. It is also the law in Georgia.  Inside dogs and cats should also be protected.

There is no cure for rabies either in pets or in people, but you can protect themraccoon3 and your family.  That is why the Franklin County Health Department is sponsoring a rabies clinic on May 2nd.

Korff said the attack last week in Stephens County is a good example of why it is so important to make sure your pets are vaccinated against rabies.

“This was an animal that was walking around in the neighborhood and was able to have contact with at least one dog and who knows what else,” Korff said. “This incident never should have happened. This dog should not have had rabies because it should have been vaccinated for rabies. It was a completely preventable situation, but it’s absolutely going to happen if we don’t get our animals vaccinated.”

Local vets will be at a number of locations across Franklin County that Saturday to offer $5 rabies vaccines.

“Our three local vets who do a great job for us all year round give back to their community with the rabies clinic at ten different sites,” Korff said. “For $5 they will vaccinate your animals and you can have peace and know that your animal will not be coming down with rabies and hurt anyone or your family.”

Now you do not have to live in Franklin County to take advantage of the rabies clinic.

For a list of times and locations, you can go online to the Franklin County Health Department Web site at www.phdistrict2.org.

WLHR News will also post the list of times and locations on our Web site once we receive that information.

You can also take advantage of an upcoming rabies clinic this Saturday at the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter on Bear Creek Road in Lavonia.  Rabies vaccines will be $5 for a one-year for dogs and cats. Horses will also be vaccinated.  The shelter rabies clinic takes place from 10a to 3p.
