Franklin County High School 2016 STAR Student Named

Franklin County High School and the Franklin County School Board have named this year’s STAR Student.

She is Amber Daylynn Churchwell.

The 2016 Franklin County High School Valedictoran is Eric Lane Whitmire and the Salutatorian is Catherine Michele Ginn.

Churchwell has chosen English teacher Angie Josey as this year’s STAR teacher.

The youngest of six, Churchwell is the daughter of Debbie and Mike English.

Amber tells WLHR News she has received a full ride scholarship in the amount of $250,000 to Colby College in Waterville, Maine.

The scholarship is through Questbridge, a non-profit organization that matches high achieving, low-income students with top colleges and universities nationwide.

While at Franklin County High, Amber has participated in a number of activities including marching band, Be the Change Club and the concert band.

The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition or STAR program honors Georgia’s highest achieving high school seniors and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development.

Since its creation in 1958 by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, the STAR Program has honored nearly 25,500 high school seniors who have in turn chosen their STAR Teachers to share in this recognition.

Locally, STAR Students and STAR Teachers are honored by their schools and receive special recognition in their communities from the more than 165 civic organizations and businesses that serve as local STAR sponsors.

The Franklin County Chamber sponsors the STAR student and honors graduates for Franklin County High School.

Chamber director Tonya Powers says a special breakfast will be held next month to honor Churchwell, Josey and the honors graduates.

“This year the breakfast will be at 7a on March 18th,” Powers said. “The time is the same and the location remains the same, but we have changed the date to the 18th instead of that first Friday in March.”

A regional and State STAR banquet will also be held this spring in Atlanta for all of the STAR students statewide and their families.
