Franklin County Closes Senior Center, Suspends all Recreation Dept Activities in Response to COVID-19

Franklin County has made the decision to close the Senior Center in response to the spread of COVID-19.

“COVID-19 is a fluid and rapidly evolving situation. Franklin County is dedicated to keeping up to date with the latest information to make the most informed decisions. Public service is our mission and public safety is at the core of what we do. The health and safety of our community is a shared responsibility and one that we take seriously,” said County Manager Beth Thomas Friday.

“While there have been no confirmed cases in Franklin or the surrounding counties at this time, we feel it is our responsibility to protect our at-risk population by limiting interaction at this time. Franklin County will be closing the Franklin County Senior Center beginning March 13th until further notice. We will continue to assess the situation and recommendations by the CDC and Georgia Department of Public Health. We will reopen the Senior Center once this concern has subsided.”

However, Thomas went on to say they will continue the County Meels on Wheels program.

“While our building may be closed to congregate activity, we are committed to ensuring seniors are able to access nutritious food during this very difficult time. We will continue our home-delivered meal routes for as long as staffing and volunteer capacity allows.”

In addition,  all Recreation Department organized activities are suspended through March 30, 2020.

Thomas said Franklin County and its partners will reevaluate at that time to determine whether the continued suspension is needed. We will continue to share additional information regarding the spring sports season as information is available.

“We understand these changes have a significant impact. Please know we make these with everyone’s best interest at heart. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we take this preventative action,” she said.
