The Franklin County School board recognizes their 2014 teachers of the year.

At their regular meeting last week, the board and school superintendent Dr. Ruth O’Dell paid tribute to one teacher from each Franklin County School.

Dr. O’Dell said this year’s group of honorees were especially impressive.

“As I look through these names I am extremely impressed with the commitment level of these people,” O’Dell told the Board. “These are people who give it all to those kids, love and care for them deeply, and I’m really proud to see that their colleagues saw them the same way.”

Teachers named this year include Carnesville Primary School teacher Beth Hearn.   Principal Jennifer Gaines called Hearn the kind of teacher who never gives up on her students.

“I can tell you that from being in her classroom that she does not stop,” Gaines said. “It is her desire to see those children succeed. That’s her goal, that’s her mission.”

Math teacher Amy Cheek was named teacher of the year for 2014 at Franklin County Middle School.  Principal Lucy Floyd said Cheek is known at the Middle school for her sense of humor and ability to draw students.

“Amy came to us six years ago from a business background, but she also came to us with a passion for learning and education,” Floyd said. “Her sense of humor and high expectations assist in being able to get the best out of students and convince them they are indeed, math people.”

Other teachers named this year include, Charity Henry, teacher of the year at Franklin County High School; Mary

Little, teacher of the year at Royston Elementary; Julie Franklin, teacher of the year at Lavonia Elementary School, and Lavonne Grizzle, special ed teacher at Carnesville Elementary.
