Franklin County BOC to Straighten Out Road Confusion

In other business Tuesday, the Franklin County commission is correcting a situation concerning a county road.

County Road 52 or Sullivan Road, as it is commonly known, was listed as a county road up until a couple of years ago.

But somehow, the road got left of the list of county maintained roads and isn’t listed by the Georgia Department of Transportation as a county road.

Because the road was left off the county road list, the road hasn’t been maintained for the last 2 years.

Sullivan Road was on the GDOT maps until 1995.

It is on the county tax maps with a defined right of way.

Also the 2005 road map shows Sullivan Road as County Road 52.

County Commissioner Jeff Jacques says there is evidence showing the road at least was at one time a county maintained road.

“The actual plat shows several of the homeowners. Not only did the surveyor of record pick up Sullivan Road, but they also picked up County Road 52 through their legal review and research, which clearly denotes to me that at some point in time they also found a definitive road number to reference,” Jacques explained.

Jacques says he believes a “paper work glitch” may be the reason the road is no longer listed as a county road.

“Somehow in the GDOT registry they have lost Sullivan Road/County Road 52,” Jacques said. “I had also look at older maps, ‘80’s and ‘90’s versions, and they clearly show Sullivan Road as being a County road.”

In addition to putting the road back on the county road rolls, Jacques also request County Road 52 be added to the Sullivan Road signage.

Since the road has never been abandoned by the county, County attorney Bubba Samuels told the Board it is still a county road and should be maintained as a county road.

The commissioners agreed to place this item on the agenda for next week’s regular meeting to change the signage and put the road back on the County road list.
