Franklin County Beefs Up Courthouse Security

Anyone attending court at the Franklin County Courthouse in Carnesville will soon have to go through extra security procedures before being allowed to enter.

“Due to the increase in violence at courthouses across the country, it has become necessary to increase security at the Franklin County Courthouse,” said Franklin County Sheriff  Steve Thomas. “Along with a walk-through metal dectector, a package, bag x-ray scanner has been implemented. As of November 16, anyone entering the courthouse will be scanned by the security officer. This will include bags, packages, briefcases or purses.”

The extra security measures take effect Monday November 16th.

Thomas tells WLHR News additionally, only one door to the courthouse will be open, forcing visitors to go through the security check.

“In order to make the security measures effect, changes have to be made on how people enter the courthouse,” Thomas said. “All doors on the east, north and south side of the courthouse will remain locked.  People will enter on the west side where the handicapped ramp is located. You will pass through the security scanner and then go on to your destination.”

Thomas said while there have been no security incidents at the Franklin County courthouse, the new security measures are designed to prevent any incident from taking place.

Realizing the new system will require a learning curve, Thomas is asking for everyone’s patience.

“Due to the layout of the historic courthouse, the traffic route will be a bit inconvenient; especially during the days when court is in session. However, this is a requirement to make our facility as security as possible. Your patience is appreciated as the new process is implemented.”

Again, the new security measures at the Franklin County Courthouse take effect on Monday, November 16th.
