Franklin Co to Schedule Another Dump Day

Last weekend’s Franklin County Dump Day turned out to be better than expected.

The dump day took place from 8a to noon last Saturday but by 12 o’clock they had to start turning people away.

Commissioner Eddie Wester thanked those who did not get to dump their stuff for their understanding.

“Thank you to all the public works people who worked Saturday and again we apologize to all those who got turned away,” he said. “One thing we have to realize too is that that is no longer a working landfill. We had to bring in trash dumpsters in and those had to be taken to Banks County to be unloaded. It’s not a working landfill anymore so it wasn’t like we could just take the trash there and dump it. Thank you for understanding.”

This was the second Dump Day the County sponsored and due to its enormous success, the Board has decided to schedule another one in the near future.

Commissioner Ryan Swails said he was one of those who got there too late, but said Dump Days should be a regular thing but perhaps a little more organized so everyone has a chance to take advantage of the free dumping.

“I think it’s something that I’m glad we that we started. We recognize that there’s an issue in our county where it’s tough for people to dump a lot of their garbage. So, it’s something that we want to continue. And I think we should look into modifying it a little bit; maybe consider a voucher system where people have an individual time window where they can dump and not feel like they’re competing with the whole county. That being said, we have the best staff and employees and there were some volunteers out there working really hard too. So, I’m grateful for all of them,” he said.

County Commission Chair Jason Macomson said the County will announce the next Dump Day as soon as a date is determined.
