Franklin BOE, City of Lavonia to Hold Millage Rate Public Hearings Today

The City of Lavonia and the Board of Education will be meeting today for their final two of the three required public hearings before voting on their respective millage rates.

Both say their proposed millage rates will include a property tax increase.

Lavonia City Manager Charles Cawthon said the City of Lavonia has tentatively adopted a millage rate that will require an increase in property taxes of 5.77 percent.

The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $100,000 is approximately $19.32 and the proposed tax increase for non-homestead property (Commercial) with a fair market value of $300,000 is approximately $59.16.

Two public hearings will be held today at 8a and again at 5p.

The Franklin County Board of Education will also hold two more public hearings today on their plan to raise property taxes before passing the proposed millage.

The Board held their first millage rate hearing last Thursday, Finance Director Chez Maxwell went over the reason for raising property taxes.

Maxwell said the tentative increase will result in a millage rate of 17 mills, an increase of 1.24 mills.

The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $175,000 is approximately $84.32 and the proposed tax increase for non-homestead property with a fair market value of $100,000 is approximately $49.60.

The School Board will hold/held a second millage public hearing at 8a in the School System administrative offices on Busha Road in Carnesville and another this evening at 6p.
