Franklin BOC Approves Re-striping Contractor

Franklin County has awarded the bid for its planned re-striping and signage of some 23 county roads.

At their meeting Monday night, county manager John Phillips gave the board of commissioners an update jon the project.

“We have received two bids for signage and striping of 23 county roads,” Phillips said. “The bids  have been reviewed by the county and by the Georgia Department of Transportation and have been approved. I would like to award the bid to Peek Pavement Markings whose bid came in at $244,278.50.”

Phillips pointed out the county was recently awarded a Georgia Department of Transportation Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant of up to $250,000 that will pay for the project.  Franklin County has identified 48 roads in all that need to be  re-striped or have new signage.  This latest LMIG will pay for the for half.

“It’s noteworthy to mention that we have actually re-applied for this grant and  have approximately 26 additional roads that we’re seeking approval for for striping and signing under this same grant,” said commissioner Jeff Jacques.

Commissioner Clint Harper asked if the current grant funding can be used on other roads.  Phillips said the current LMIG funding can only be used on the roads listed in the grant application.

Phillips said they hope to start the re-striping in the spring, but there could be a glitch.

“there’s a little bit of uncertainty because there’s a new specification for paint and it’s a little unclear what the guidelines are for paint and application, temperature, and that sort of thing,” Phillips said. “But we are proceeding with contracts and have a pre-construction meeting with the contractor. After that we’ll have a better idea of what our schedule is like.”

Phillips said once begun, the entire 23-road re-striping and signage project will take a little over a year to complete. After hearing from Phillips, the board voted unanimously to approve the recommended bid award for the project.
