Fr. County School System’s Georgia Young Author Winners Announced

The Franklin County Board of Education honored the school district’s winners of the Young Georgia Authors writing competition at its regular meeting Tuesday.

K-5 Curriculum Director Jennifer Underwood said all of the students at every grade level participated in the writing competition that is designed to give students a love for writing.

Underwood said the competition starts with the school winners and then progresses to the State level.

The names of the district winners were announced Tuesday evening at the Fr Co Board of Education meeting and presented with certificates.

At the Elementary School Level, the Winners included:

Lavonia Elelmentary Kindergarten student Ellison Hamner for her work: My Best Day Ever
Royston Elementary First Grader Emory Reel for the Pumpkin Patch
Carnesville Elementary Second Grader Evan Tate for The Time We Got Putoonya
Royston Elementary Third Grade student Jesus Espinoza for The Scary Room
Royston Elementary Fourth Grader Georgia Broome for A Dreamy Orb
Royston Elementary Fift Grader Adah Alzen for The Little Bird

At the Middle School Level:

Sixth Grader Brooke Graham for her work Under the Snow
Seventh Grade winner was Dorothy Burns for Memories
The eighth-grade winner was Hess Fowler for Silent Night

At the High School level:

Ninth Grade winner was Chloe Gibby for Penalty
Tenth Grader Gabriel Zwick for Amen
Eleventh Grade winner was Nathan Estrada for Dutiful Servant

Unlike many writing competitions, YGA does not provide a prompt to which students must respond or provide any other boundaries to their genre choice or creativity beyond a 1900-word maximum length.

Entries may include Short Stories, Poetry, Essays/Literary Criticism/Analysis, Journalism, Academic/Research Reports, Personal Narratives, or Any Other Original Student Writing.

This prestigious competition has been engaging Georgia students for more than two decades and is open to any student currently enrolled in Georgia public schools, grades K-12.

The competition is sponsored by the Georgia Language Arts Supervisors (GLAS) and the Georgia RESA Network with support from the Georgia Department of Education.
