Former State Representative Jeanette Jamieson Passes Away

Funeral arrangements have been announced for longtime Toccoa public servant Jeanette Jamieson.

The former State Representative and current Toccoa City Commissioner passed away Tuesday at her home.

The owner of Jamieson Tax Service in Toccoa for many years, Jamieson was mainly known as a veteran public servant serving six years as a Stephens County Commissioner, 24 years as an elected member of the Georgia House of Representatives and served as a Toccoa City Commissioner since 2014.

Toccoa Mayor David Austin said she had a tremendous influence on the City and on his life.

“I was very sad about her passing. I’ve known Jeanette for about five decades now. She was County Commissioner, she’s been a State Representative and for the last few years, she’s been a City Commissioner. So, she’s had a tremendous impact,” Austin told WLHR News. “Not only locally but across Georgia with the different offices she’s been in. She’s always been a good friend to me and I’ve always gone to her for advice on different things. She’s helped me both personally and professionally. You always knew where you stood with Jeanette and that was a good thing. Her wisdom and advice and help with the decision-making process serving on the commission – we’re going to miss that and miss her as a friend, too.”

Toccoa City Commissioner Terry Carter said her service to the Toccoa-Stephens County and the State was invaluable.

“Like so many of us in the Community, we had always heard of Jeanette Jamieson and appreciated her leadership. But for those of us who were fortunate enough to get to know her personally, we could truly understand her passion and her dedication that she had for our Community and the residents and the things that she would do over and above the call of duty,” Carter recalled. “As we began to work together on the City Commission I gained a whole new level of respect for Jeanette and could see that there was truly nothing that she wouldn’t do to help the City and our residents. I just can’t think of a more important and significant that did more for Toccoa-Stephens County and what she was able to accomplish is extraordinary. We will miss her.”

During her time in the Georgia House of Representatives, Jamieson was the first woman to chair a major committee and the first woman in Georgia’s history to serve as the Governor’s Floor Leader.

Additionally, Jamieson received the “President’s Award for Innovative Government” from President George W. Bush for her role in Rural Development.

She served and currently serves on several Boards: Stephens County Soil & Water Conversation District, Toccoa-Stephens County Humane Shelter, and Resource Conservation & Development. She was a member of Confidence United Methodist Church, and she owned and operated Jamieson Accounting & Tax Service.

The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 1:00pm – 3:30pm on Friday, April 28, 2023.

Funeral services will be held at four o’clock Friday, April 28, 2023 from the Chapel of Whitlock Mortuary with the Rev. Ricky McFarlin and the Rev. Dennis Wilkes officiating.
