Former Boggs Mtn Shelter Director Expected Back in Court Today

Lowanda Peanut KilbyIn Rabun County, Lawanda “Peanut” Kilby, the former Boggs Mtn Animal Shelter director convicted of secretly ordering the deaths of healthy dogs and cats so she could go gambling will be back in court today.

According to a report on SKY104 News, Kilby’s attorney Tim Healey is expected to ask a judge to reduce his client’s sentence, which he calls excessive.

A Rabun County jury convicted Kilby on 60 counts of theft and racketeering in connection with her Lucky Dog/Lucky Cat program.

Kilby was sentenced to 25 years, 15 to be spent in prison.

During her trial in May, several pet owners, including a couple from Toccoa, testified that Kilby lied to them about the wonderful new homes the pets would receive under that program.

Kilby had people donate money, sometimes hundreds of dollars, to ensure the pets they had given up would not be put to sleep but would be adopted into new homes.

But an employee whistleblower revealed Kilby had actually euthanized the pets and pocketed the donation money to fund gambling trips to Cherokee Casino.

Those victims have been invited to testify in today’s hearing.
