Former Banks County Jailer Arrested

Banks County authorities have arrested a former Banks County Sheriff’s deputy.

32-year old Jason Nathaniel Layfield of Maysville was arrested Thursday and charged with
misdemeanor simple assault and misdemeanor simple battery.

Layfield is a former Banks County Sheriff’s deputy jailer at the Banks County Detention Center.

The charges stemmed from two separate events occurring between January 13 and 14, 2016 at the Banks County Jail.

On January 19, 2016, Banks County Sheriff Carlton Speed requested the GBI Athens office to investigate the incidents.

Layfield was terminated during the criminal investigation.

He had been employed since June of 2011.

The facts of the investigation were presented to the Piedmont Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office and warrants were obtained.
