Food Processing Center in Lavonia Open Today

A reminder for those who were out in their back garden over the weekend harvesting their corn, beans, tomatoes, and other garden goodies, the Food Processing Center in Lavonia is open today and Thursday.

Located in the back of the historic Lavonia Cannery on Hartwell Road, the Food Processing Center is operated by the Franklin High School Ag Department and funded by the Franklin County Board of Education.

The Franklin County Food Processing Center opened last week and is open for growers to bring their produce for canning through July 28.

A couple of things to remember:

The cannery is open Mondays and Thursdays from 7:30a to 11:30a.

•You can bring your own jars and lids or purchase cans from the processing center
•You must arrive before 11 am as most processing takes 1 to 2 hours
•They only accept cash or check payment
•And they are happy to help you with the steps of processing, so you do not have to be an expert at canning!

Patrons may prepare and pack fruit, vegetables, and meats while agricultural teachers handle the processing.

Additionally, people may also can soups, juices, sauces, and other specialty items they care to make. There is also equipment for canning peaches and for canning in quart cans and glass jars.

Metal cans are furnished by the Food Processing Center.
