Five Qualify for Hart County District 2 BOC Race

Qualifying for the District Two Hart County Commission seat has ended and five candidates are now vying for the seat left vacant by the sudden death of commissioner Dan Reyen last November.

They include Jerry Canady, James Faulkner, Gary Hamilton, Frankie Teasley and Charles Walters.

Canady was the first to come forward in early December to announce his intention to run.  Canady said at the time if he’s elected, he would focus on creating more openness and accountability in county government.

Faulkner, meantime, is a retired industrial engineer.  He recently told the Hartwell Sun he would work to bring more jobs into the county and his experience is exactly what the county needs.

Dr. Gary Hamilton is president of the Hart County Property Owners’ Association.  Hamilton said in addition to working to bring more jobs into the county, he would also work to see the creation of a county animal shelter.  He also believes the loss of the county’s emergency room was a detriment to bringing new jobs into the county.

Whoever wins the special election on March 18 will serve the remainder of Reyen’s unexpired term, which runs through December 31. They will then have to qualify and run again later this year for the next four-year term which starts in January 2015.
